Conductor Judith Yan returns to the Saskatoon Symphony to lead the orchestra in the program with which she was originally slated to make her debut. Yan’s career has taken her all over North America, Europe and Asia including conducting the National Ballet companies of Canada and Korea, the Vancouver Opera, and the West Australian Symphony. Last season she created an incredible Transatlantic cruise for SSO audiences. This concert includes Tchaikovsky’s beloved Swan Lake Suite paired with Nia Imani Franklin’s Chrysalis Extended.

Becoming Miss America (2019) was just another one of composer and soprano Nia Imani Franklin ’s accolades. She is the founder and operator of Compose Her , an initiative meant to advance and nurture women and girls in classical composition and musicianship.

Regina cellist Jonathan Craig Penner returns to the prairies to make his SSO debut. Penner won the 2019 Saskatchewan Music Festival Shurniak Concerto competition. He will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Roccoco Theme.

This concert is approximately 70 minutes and without intermission.

With great anticipation and careful planning, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is heading back to the big stage. We can’t wait to share the music together. The SSO is taking every possible measure to ensure the safety of audience members and musicians at performances. Proof of vaccination, or a recent negative Covid-19 test (within 24-72 hours of concert start time), is required at the door along with a valid photo ID. At this time the SSO asks that all patrons remain masked unless consuming food and beverage.
